March 26th, 2024: Dealing With Disagreement Maturely

When we say we believe in someone, something, or some thoughts about life, it does not mean we are "anti" anyone else. For example, when we believe in the traditional family structure, it does not mean those with different beliefs should not live their own ways.

Perhaps many people have decided that their worldviews will be based on a whole series of "anti-something." That is not enough to define one's basis of morality. There are vegan folks who not only avoid eating meat but also condemn meat consumers and producers. There are those who advocate for abolishing the police and support social media censorship. Some protest against pro-life advocates without considering that they exist because someone believed they mattered before they were born.

It is healthy for us to recognize that the best way to engage with others who hold different worldviews and stances than we do is not to simply shut them up. Immorality tends to be defined by fear and abusiveness. We have witnessed this in Canada as our government has exploited people's fear of Covid to abuse its power. Our government does not believe it has to be accountable to its people regarding how it spends its money.

So let us hope we have the freedom to disagree with one another without resorting to calling for each other's destruction.

"Keeping away from strife is an honor for a man,
But any fool will quarrel." - Proverbs 20:3
