March 25th, 2024: Woking Our Christian Life

Many years ago, there was a TV show in Canada with the title "Wok With Yan." At the time, it was one of the first TV programs about the art of Chinese cuisine. Now many people know what a wok is. However, not many know how to wok (Yes, it is now a verb). Let us look at the three main preparation steps for woking and compare that to living a Christian life.

It involves cooking with high heat. We would have a lot more fun with a wok that way. We can stir and mix ingredients a lot more smoothly and evenly. Christians should expect heat as they claim to believe in God. The more heat we face, the more real our faith becomes. The more challenges we encounter, the more we discover our personal depth.

Woking involves constant stirring. When we stir well, we can now toss the ingredients together. Life as a Christian constantly demands us to re-examine ourselves. We question the assumptions of this world about life and toss them around in order to discover the answers God has given. Life becomes a lot richer when we are able to weave all of our experiences with God together.

Preparation is an important step in Woking. Sometimes it takes more time to prepare our ingredients than to wok itself. We need to be able to envision how all ingredients are going to mix together. Christians need to have discipline in personal preparation as we engage with the world. We need to learn how to integrate our minds, our hearts, and our faith. When that happens, we have a delicious wok. Christian faith should be delightful and satisfying.

"… let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful." -
