March 23rd, 2024: Solving a Problem by Creating Another

I am writing this as I wait for my flight home. The snowstorm in Alberta is the reason for the delay. A friend's daughter texted expressing her frustration and disappointment about not being selected for a job. She felt that she was treated unfairly because the employer chose a much less qualified candidate.

I have been thinking a lot about that because of all the DEI conditions we have to face in the workplace these days. Here are some of my thoughts.

What would we face in 10 years from now when we continue to select people for highly professional jobs based on their oppressed history and not their qualifications? Would we be better off?

What would it mean for people of color when it comes to their pride of accomplishment? Would they feel cheated because others might think they got where they are not because of their merits?

Dealing with an unfair reality by creating another will never be a good solution. We should continue to empower young people from all backgrounds to achieve greater things through a fair and qualified process.

"He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?" - Micah 6:8
