Feb 8th, 2024: The Year of The Dragon

According to the Chinese calendar, this is the year of the dragon. Dragons represent vastly different concepts between Asian cultures and Christian Biblical imagery. In Asian traditions, dragon characteristics include wisdom, longevity, and prosperity, while in Christian Biblical imagery, dragons are often associated with evil, chaos, and destruction.

Contemplating the year ahead, I find myself torn between hope in the goodness of God and awareness of humanity's capacity for evil. Once viewed as a beacon of guidance, America's influence seems diminished amidst the turmoil we've created for ourselves. Who would seek help from us in such a state?

Beyond the dragon imagery, it's evident that people universally yearn for freedom and the pursuit of a meaningful life. Despite being granted freedom of choice by God, humanity has often faltered. Similarly, bearing the image of God should imbue life with purpose, yet we've marred that deeply. Perhaps, to be a Christian is to navigate the tension between Asian and Biblical dragon imagery, acknowledging both the inherent goodness and fallen nature of humanity.

Jeremiah 29:13:
"You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart."

Colossians 3:2:
"Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth."
