Nov 2nd, 2023: Resentment vs Disappointment

I recently had a conversation with a friend about the differences between resentment and disappointment. These emotional responses often occur in similar situations, but they have distinct characteristics.

Resentment is often accompanied by bitterness and indignation. It arises when we perceive injustice or mistreatment, leading to thoughts of retribution or revenge. Resentment can be long-lasting and can harm our relationships with others.

On the other hand, disappointment is a manifestation of sadness. It results in a sense of disillusionment, where hope is shattered, and expectations are crushed. Disappointment doesn't have the same long-term impact as resentment, and it tends to make us more contemplative than reactive.

Both resentment and disappointment are negative emotions, but resentment can lead to more volatile behavior, while disappointment often leads us to seek personal solace.

Psalm 86:15

"But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness."
