Oct 9th, 2023: It is Good to Rest

The Harvard Gazette recently published a report highlighting a concerning increase in cancer cases among individuals under 50, attributed to sleep deprivation and heightened alcohol consumption. This risk appears to be escalating with each successive generation, as noted by Shuji Ogino, a professor and physician-scientist.

At the heart of Christian belief lies the concept of living a godly life, which includes a commitment to observing the Sabbath. This practice, inspired by God's own rest after creating the world in six days, serves as a means of rejuvenating our soul, mind, and body. Through rest, we become more alive and can focus entirely on God, turning it into an act of worship.

During our Sabbath, we engage in prayer and solitude to maintain the courage and strength required for caring for others. It is only by learning to rest in God that we can effectively serve others.

Addiction often emerges as a consequence of experiencing spiritual, physical, and emotional depletion. It's not surprising to observe an increase in alcohol consumption as sleep becomes scarce. When we neglect God's guidance, we become susceptible to seeking solace in other, potentially harmful, substances or behaviors.

Exodus 20:8-11:

“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God.
