Oct 3rd, 2023: Why Celebrating Mediocrity?

"I thought I was missing something when I was watching the Toronto Blue Jays players and coaches popping champagne. It was like having a time-warp experience. That kind of celebration is usually reserved for winning a championship. They barely made it to the baseball playoffs as a wildcard team. What is there to celebrate?

I wasn't alone in my thoughts. One of the sports broadcasters also raised the same observation. Are we now celebrating mediocrity? It's like in elementary school where we give out medals to kids just for participation.

I don't believe God desires our mediocrity when it comes to our calling. We can't go about His service in the world with anything less than our best effort. Perhaps that's why we haven't been able to make the impact in this society that we should.

What does it mean to be excellent? Are we striving for the life to which God has called us? Do others see God's compassion in our relationships with them? Are we growing in our relationship with God? What should be our guiding principles?

When we seriously consider all of the above, what we serve on the plate every Sunday hardly qualifies us for a wildcard place in our pursuit of godliness."
