Oct 28th, 2023: The Least of These

This picture conveys a powerful message, illustrating how children view the world with a unique perspective. It reminds us that we often perceive the suffering of others more empathetically when we approach life with childlike innocence. In doing so, we can avoid dismissing the values and needs of others in our self-concerned attitude.

The man in the image might have been in his distressing situation for days, yet it appears that most people have accepted it as normal, continuing their daily routines without showing concern. However, the little girl stands out by recognizing the abnormality of the situation and sensing the man's need for a drink, an act unnoticed by the others.

This scene prompts us to reflect on how we go about our daily lives. Do we hope that someone will truly see and understand us for who we are? Employees often experience this when their bosses fail to do so. Similarly, spouses may face struggles when they feel ignored by their partners, and church members can become frustrated when their pastors overlook them. This raises the question of how we can be sure that God is aware of our needs, desires, and fears.

The elderly man in the image demonstrates humility by accepting help from the young girl. This challenges us to consider whether we are humble enough to seek and accept help from God in times of trouble. Moreover, it encourages us to reflect on our willingness to welcome assistance from others in our lives.

Jesus said: “whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” (Matt 25:40)
