Sept 14th, 2023: A Needed Conversation

A man who had been struggling with alcoholism for years. His addiction had strained his relationship with his mother to the breaking point. She, once his biggest supporter, had become distant and weary from years of disappointment and worry.

During my last conversation with 'Bob,' he decided it was time to confront his demons and try to mend the fractured bond with his mother. He had made a decision to enter a treatment facility that has a rehabilitation program.

It was not easy for him to make that call. His heart was heavy with guilt. He could hear the hesitation in his mother's voice when she answered, but he pushed through.

The beginning of their conversation was strained, filled with awkward silences. Bob began by apologizing for the pain he had caused and for the countless broken promises. His mother was quiet, and then we could hear her sobbing.

Bob mentioned his deep regret for the many years of turmoil. His mother listened and tried to believe what she heard. It was good for both of them, although it was difficult.

His mom finally mentioned how much she had been missing and worrying about him. They both knew things were still fragile, and they needed time to rebuild hope and trust. There would also be moments of challenge as well.

Bob and I prayed after that conversation. We prayed for hope, clarity, and understanding. It was the beginning of where God wants him to make that call. Go about life with obedience and trust, and God will deliver us from all evil.

“And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” - James 5:15-16
