It is concerning to witness the practice of punishing individuals based on their academic achievements in the name of equality. Many elite universities in the United States have indeed been accused of implementing unfair admission practices that disadvantage Asian students due to their racial background. This practice has raised questions about the American dream, the celebration of excellence and hard work, and the respect for the American Constitution.
To illustrate the point, let's imagine a scenario where someone in power dictates that NBA teams can only have a limited percentage of players from African American ancestry, citing an unfair physical advantage. They further impose a requirement that a certain percentage of the team must be from Asian heritage, regardless of their talents and skills. This hypothetical scenario reflects the unjust nature of affirmative action policies when taken to an extreme.
This form of affirmative action, as applied to college admissions, is detrimental to both Asian students and other qualified applicants. It sends a message to Asian students that they are not truly welcome or valued, and it implies that other students may not deserve their academic positions. Furthermore, it is disheartening to see that while some institutions are willing to accept the notion that a male student can compete in female sports programs without acknowledging physical advantages, they simultaneously argue that Asian students pose a threat due to their proven academic excellence.
It is important to recognize that intelligence is not determined by race, and Asians are not inherently smarter than any other race. Many Asian students come from families with a strong tradition of academic commitment, emphasizing the values of family, community, hard work, and a drive to excel in their pursuits. By implementing unfair admission practices, these universities undermine the sacrifices made by parents, diminish personal self-respect, and disregard the fundamental human desire to learn and discover.
It is crucial to foster a fair and merit-based system of college admissions that considers each applicant's qualifications, achievements, and potential rather than penalizing or favoring individuals based on their racial or ethnic background. Such an approach would uphold the principles of equality, excellence, and respect for every individual, aligning with the true spirit of the American dream and the values enshrined in the American Constitution.
