July 23rd, 2023: Phubbing and Its Damages

Phubbing has emerged as a significant issue in human interaction, with our constant attachment to digital devices giving us a misleading sense of connection. This addiction has had serious consequences on marriages, leading to a loss of intimacy and connection within immediate relationships. Unfortunately, society has come to accept this behavior as the norm.

Recently, during a business meeting at a restaurant, I observed a family of two teenagers seated next to our table, hardly engaging in conversation throughout the entire dinner. This is just one example of how family time is compromised due to excessive device usage.

It seems that our cell phones and tablets have provided an escape from difficult conversations, allowing us to avoid discomfort and awkward silences by resorting to phubbing instead. This has become an acceptable way to distance ourselves from one another.

Furthermore, phubbing not only impacts our human interactions but also affects our connection with God. Our minds and hearts are constantly distracted by trivial information about other people's lives, leaving us with little time to focus on discerning what God desires for our own lives. The prevalence of triviality has overshadowed our ability to develop a deeper awareness of God and meaningful connections with one another.

“Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.” - Jeremiah 33:3
