July 21st, 2023: Dying to the Old Self

"Burning" is a practice often undertaken by young people who have just acquired a new set of tires for their vehicles. This involves intentionally wearing down the old tires through intense driving, creating an exhilarating experience as they push their cars to the maximum, often with one car holding back the other.

Similarly, when we choose to become followers of Jesus, we are called to undergo a transformational process known as "dying to self." This process requires letting go of our old ways and embracing a new self aligned with Jesus' teachings. So, what does this process of "dying to self" look like?

Firstly, it is essential. Just as driving with a mix of old and new tires is unsafe, trying to live with both the old and new self is spiritually detrimental. To truly follow Jesus, we must fully embrace the transformation and let go of our former selves.

Secondly, "dying to self" is an intentional and well-planned process. Just as the young drivers intentionally plan the thrilling experience of "burning," Christians must also be deliberate in their commitment to change. This process involves aligning our actions and thoughts with the teachings of Jesus, seeking personal growth and spiritual development.

Thirdly, "dying to self" is a costly endeavor. While young drivers incur a finite cost for burning their tires, for Christians, it is a lifelong commitment. The process of transformation involves untangling the impacts of sin in our lives, which requires ongoing effort and dedication.

"If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily* and follow me. 24For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it." - Luke 9:23-24
