July 15th, 2023: Going Woke

Our higher education institutions have become "woke." They no longer reflect the true meaning of learning and the search for truth. Truth has become quite subjective in today's society, as subjectivity forms the foundation for defining various aspects of human life.

Therefore, WOKE can be understood as an acronym for "Waiving Objectivity Kills Education."

We have lost objectivity in understanding our history. We cannot judge the past solely based on our current understanding of humanity. We can truly appreciate the past without necessarily agreeing with it if we maintain objectivity in light of our contemporary discoveries. Science will never be the ultimate truth in itself; it will always remain a quest for truth. If we believe that our existence can be solely attributed to a process of algorithms, we fail to appreciate the spiritual dimension of our existence.

I have a relative whose work involves producing replicas of well-known paintings. She informed me that they have to research the materials and techniques available to artists during that particular time to create these replicas. Contemporary materials are not permitted due to the desire for authenticity. So, why don't we try to learn about our history without applying what we know today? We cannot make judgments about people if we don't put ourselves in their shoes.

Erasing history has its own alarming implications. We have begun by losing a sense of personal history. Many individuals would rather forget their family histories. Perhaps we lack healthy mechanisms for dealing with shame, or maybe we have denied the need for grace in our lives. Grace can help us integrate what we learn from the past into the present, equipping us to anticipate the future.

"Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long." - Psalm 25: 5
