July 14th, 2023: What Happens to Reasoning?

"So he was reasoning in the synagogue with the Jews and the God-fearing Gentiles, and in the market place every day with those who happened to be present." - Acts 17: 7

The ability to reason is a distinct characteristic that separates us from animals. When dogs are displeased with each other's presence, they often bark loudly and display intimidating behavior. In such situations, peaceful coexistence becomes unattainable, as the intimidated dog eventually has to escape and leave.

In recent months, many campus demonstrations have mirrored animal behavior rather than exemplifying human reasoning. If a crowd disagrees with a speaker's views, they resort to yelling, screaming, and intimidating tactics to silence them. It is disheartening to witness our esteemed academic institutions endorsing and condoning such primitive behaviors.

Perhaps one of the consequences of proclaiming that God is dead is the erosion of our human capacity to engage in reasoned discussions and meaningful dialogue. If many voices are silenced, there can be no meaningful pursuit of truth. Additionally, it is crucial to be cautious about equating differences of opinion with hate. Making that leap in human psychology requires a significant stretch of reasoning.
