July 11th, 2023: Hypocrisy

"But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy." - James 3:17

Recently, our public school system made the decision to eliminate prayers and many Christmas-related activities in order to promote religious diversity and avoid imposing one's beliefs on others. We recognize the importance of individual choices, as each person has the freedom to decide their own beliefs. As a result, even sales clerks were instructed not to say "Merry Christmas" during that time of year to ensure inclusivity.

However, it is now mandatory for all of us to participate in pride week, which some people find unsettling. While it is important to respect people's choices regarding human sexuality, it is crucial that this respect is reciprocated. The concern arises from the fact that prayers are not allowed at school events, but participation in pride week is enforced. This approach hinders meaningful conversations and understanding between individuals with different perspectives on life. True pride lies in fostering mutual respect and compassion, rather than promoting coercion.

Many of us are perfectly accepting of those who wish to celebrate pride week based on their own choices. However, we believe that it should not be imposed on us or forced upon us. Just as I am proud of my Vietnamese heritage, I would never compel anyone to celebrate Vietnamese customs or traditions. Pride should be built on the principles of mutual respect and understanding, rather than exerting pressure and manipulation on others to conform.
