June 27th, 2023: "Poor in Spirit"

Some young men recently asked me about how one can go about dealing with the generational sins that exist in our family history. The first non-parable teaching of Jesus might give us some insights into confronting the sinful history of humanity. The passage in the Bible is Matthew 5:3-12.

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

Recognizing spiritual poverty begins with humility. Essentially, we bring nothing into the world, and when we depart from this world, we certainly will not take anything with us.

Humility calls us to a place where we can be free to empty ourselves in the presence of God. We will be free to serve others without asking for anything in return.

The promise for those who live in humility is the kingdom of heaven. When we choose to empty ourselves by serving others, we will have an advanced taste of heaven.
