May 14th, 2023: Happy Mother's Day

"Happy Mother's Day!"

I got into trouble a few years when I mentioned the Motherhood of God. We have failed to understand the Fatherhood of God when we restrict ourselves to the meaning of fatherhood according to earthly notions.

What does God do to reflect motherhood within Himself?

Mothers comfort their children. She understands what her kids are going through. She listens to them when they are hurt. She is there for them when they feel alone.

"As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem." - Isaiah 49:15

Mothers protect their children. She would allow anyone to do any harm to them. She warns them of the dangers ahead. She attacks predators when they come close to her children.

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!" - Matthew 23: 37

Mothers are gentle toward their children. A mother's gentleness creates security in her children. It allows them time to work through their own struggles while knowing that her gentleness will be the basis for their relationship.

"But we were gentle among you like a nursing mother taking care of her own children." - 1 Thessalonians 2: 7

There is much more we can talk about how motherhood reflects the nature of God. For the time being, I am content with the knowledge that the love of a mother reveals the essence of God.
