March 25th, 2023: A Busted Life

Some of you might know about anode rods in your water heater tanks. They are used to reduce the potential corrosion of the tank by taking on the debris inside the tank. Plumbers also call them "sacrificial rods''. This corrosion will shorten the lifespan of a hot water tank.

Christians believe the cross is our sacrificial rod. It is when Jesus takes our sinful debris upon himself and saves us from the corrosion of life. The cross grants us access to everlasting life, and we will be blameless in the presence of God.

A busted water heater tank is not a pretty scene. Its damage can be extensive. It can spread beyond the surrounding area as water continues to find its way to travel. A life broken by sin is not that pretty either. Our sins will destroy more lives than just ours. Sins will find ways to penetrate all aspects of human relationships. They compromise communities and society as a whole.

We are uncomfortable with the notion of sin because we have denied God as the author of morality. We can be the final judge of our own life. A water heater tank cannot tell us when it is about to bust. We need that divine sacrificial rod to rescue us from our spiritual corrosion of this life.

"There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death." - Proverbs 14: 12
